The Test That Won’t Come Back “Normal”
If you’re a parent who has heard the words “everything looks normal” while knowing deep down that something still doesn’t feel right with your child, you’re not alone.
We hear versions of this from moms and dads in our office all the time:
“Her labs came back normal.”
“We tried the supplements, but nothing really changed.”
“We got another diagnosis, but we still don’t understand why this is happening.”
Sometimes, normal test results don’t mean there’s nothing going on. They may simply mean the tests you’ve done weren’t designed to measure the system that could be playing an important role in what you’re seeing every day: the nervous system.
That’s one of the reasons we use Neurological INSiGHT Scans here at Inspire Life Chiropractic.
Why the Nervous System May Be the Missing Piece
Traditional testing like bloodwork, MRIs, and EEGs can provide incredibly valuable information. But each test is designed to look for specific things, and they don’t necessarily tell us how well a child’s nervous system is adapting to and handling everyday stress.
That matters because the nervous system is constantly receiving information, processing it, and coordinating how the body responds.
Think of it like the communication network for your child’s entire body. Sensory, autonomic, and motor pathways are continually working together to influence internal functions, movement, coordination, and how the body responds to the world around it.
The autonomic nervous system is especially important because it helps regulate many of the things the body does automatically, including digestion, sleep, heart rate, and stress responses.
In little ones, we often simplify this down to four foundational functions: eat, sleep, poop, and move.
When we assess a child’s nervous system, we’re looking at how that system is functioning and adapting, not simply whether or not a symptom or diagnosis is present.
Your family may already be utilizing physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutritional support, or other incredible resources. Chiropractic care doesn’t have to replace those tools. Instead, looking at nervous system function can provide another important piece of the bigger picture.
What Makes INSiGHT Scans Different
At Inspire Life Chiropractic, scans aren’t something we perform once and forget about.
We begin with Neurological INSiGHT Scans to establish an objective baseline of nervous system function. Throughout care, we repeat scans at specific progress points so we can compare changes over time alongside the changes families are noticing at home.
This gives both our team and parents something incredibly valuable: objective information.
Rather than relying only on symptoms or how someone feels on a particular day, the scans allow us to look at patterns related to nervous system stress, tension, balance, and adaptability.
For families navigating things like digestive challenges, sleep struggles, sensory differences, focus and attention challenges, emotional regulation, or other ongoing concerns, this information can help us better understand how the nervous system may be functioning beneath the surface.
The nervous system works through constant two-way communication. Sensory nerves bring information into the brain and spinal cord, while motor pathways help coordinate the body’s response.
When stress begins interfering with that communication and the body has difficulty adapting efficiently, patterns of tension and dysregulation can develop. In chiropractic, we often talk about these patterns in relation to subluxation and nervous system dysregulation.
And in children, this system is developing at an incredible pace.
A child’s brain grows rapidly during the first years of life, making early nervous system development and adaptability an important part of their overall foundation.
That’s why we believe nervous system function deserves a place in the conversation alongside other important measures of childhood health and development.
The Three INSiGHT Scans, in Plain Language
At ILC, we use three different Neurological INSiGHT Scans together. Each one gives us a different piece of information about how the nervous system is functioning.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
HRV is the first scan we perform at Inspire Life Chiropractic.
Heart Rate Variability gives us insight into how adaptable and resilient the autonomic nervous system is.
Your child’s nervous system is constantly responding to stressors, whether that’s a busy school day, a change in routine, a big emotion, physical activity, lack of sleep, or everyday environmental stress.
A healthy nervous system needs to be able to shift gears when necessary and then return to a more regulated state afterward.
HRV helps us look at that ability to adapt.
Rather than simply measuring how fast the heart is beating, HRV looks at the small variations in time between heartbeats. Those variations can provide insight into the balance and adaptability of the autonomic nervous system.
For us, it’s an important starting point for understanding how a child’s body may be responding to and recovering from stress.
NeuroThermal Scan
The NeuroThermal Scan measures temperature patterns along the spine.
Because temperature regulation is influenced by the autonomic nervous system, these patterns can give us additional information about where nervous system stress may be present.
This scan is gentle and non-invasive, which means we can use it with everyone from newborn babies to kids, teens, moms, and dads.
Rather than using the scan to diagnose a particular condition, we use the information to identify patterns and better understand how the nervous system is functioning.
NeuroSpinal EMG Scan
The NeuroSpinal EMG Scan measures patterns of muscle activity and tension along the spine.
Muscle tone is controlled by the nervous system, so these patterns can give us another objective look at how much energy the body may be using to maintain posture and respond to stress.
For some children, we may see patterns associated with higher levels of tension or a nervous system that appears to be working overtime. For others, we may see differences in coordination and balance between different areas.
Combined with HRV and NeuroThermal findings, the EMG scan helps us build a much more complete picture of nervous system function.
Looking at the Whole Picture
No single scan tells us everything about a child.
That’s why we don’t look at these results in isolation.
We consider the scans alongside your child’s history, development, current challenges, daily patterns, and the changes you’re noticing throughout care.
Together, the three INSiGHT Scans provide an objective window into nervous system function that we simply can’t get by looking at symptoms alone.
And perhaps most importantly, they give us something we can track over time.
Parents often notice changes at home first. Maybe their child is sleeping more consistently, handling transitions differently, recovering from big emotions more easily, or simply seeming more comfortable in their body.
Progress scans allow us to compare those observations with objective changes in nervous system patterns.
You Deserve More Than “Everything Looks Normal”
If you’ve repeatedly been told that everything looks normal, but you still have questions about what you’re seeing in your child, it may be worth looking at things through a different lens.
Symptoms and behaviors don’t exist in a vacuum. Sleep, digestion, sensory processing, emotional regulation, movement, focus, and adaptability are all influenced by complex systems working together.
The nervous system is one important part of that picture.
At Inspire Life Chiropractic, our goal isn’t to replace the other providers, therapies, or resources your family may need. It’s to help you better understand your child’s nervous system and give you objective information about how it is functioning and adapting.
Sometimes, having another piece of the puzzle can make the bigger picture a whole lot clearer.
