Why Transitions Feel Like a Battle (And What Your Child’s Nervous System Has to Do With It)

If getting your child out the door feels like a full-blown negotiation every single morning, you are definitely not the only family experiencing it.

The screen-off-for-dinner battle. The meltdown when it’s time to leave the grocery store. The Sunday night emotions before another school week begins. The 45-minute standoff over putting on shoes.

Transitions can be one of the biggest stress points in a family’s day, especially for kids who already struggle with focus, anxiety, sensory processing, emotional regulation, or adapting to change.

And while it can look like a behavior problem on the outside, there may be much more happening underneath the surface.

We hear it from parents all the time:

"We’ve tried the reward charts, the visual timers, the countdowns, the deep breathing... and we’re still struggling."

That’s because transitions require a tremendous amount of coordination from the developing brain and nervous system. When a child is already operating with a high stress load, even a seemingly simple change can feel overwhelming.

Understanding what is happening neurologically can completely change the way we look at these moments and, more importantly, how we support our kids through them.

What We See Every Week at ILC

We hear similar stories from families in our office all the time.

Mornings end in tears. Getting out the door takes forever. School transitions require extra support. Pickup brings big emotions. Bedtime turns into another battle.

Many of these families have already tried so much.

They’ve read the parenting books. They’ve implemented routines. They’ve worked with teachers and therapists. They’ve tried visual schedules, timers, rewards, consequences, and calming strategies.

And sometimes those tools are incredibly helpful.

But when a child’s nervous system is already overwhelmed, even the best tools may only go so far.

Instead of asking only, “How do we stop this behavior?” we also want to ask:

“What is making it so difficult for this child’s nervous system to adapt right now?”

That question can lead us in a very different direction.

Research also shows significant overlap between challenges like ADHD and anxiety. A 2022 national survey found anxiety was among the most common co-occurring conditions in children with ADHD, affecting roughly 4 in 10 children.

While every child is different and these conditions are complex, this overlap is one reason we believe it is important to look beyond individual behaviors and consider how well the nervous system is adapting to everyday stress.

Why Transitions Are So Hard for Developing Brains

Think about everything your child’s brain has to accomplish during a simple transition.

They have to stop what they’re currently doing.

Shift their attention away from it.

Process what you’re asking.

Remember what comes next.

Organize their body and thoughts around the new task.

And then actually begin it.

Researchers sometimes refer to part of this process as “set shifting,” or the ability to move attention and thinking from one task or set of rules to another.

This relies heavily on executive functioning skills associated with the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain that continues developing well into early adulthood.

For children who already struggle with attention, anxiety, sensory processing, or emotional regulation, switching gears can require even more neurological energy.

That’s why something that seems small to us, like saying, “Okay, shoes on, it’s time to go,” can sometimes feel enormous to them.

A Stressed Nervous System Has a Harder Time Adapting

One of our favorite ways to explain the Autonomic Nervous System is to think of it like a car with a gas pedal and a brake.

The sympathetic nervous system is like the gas pedal. It helps us activate, respond, focus, move, and react when needed.

The parasympathetic nervous system is more like the brake. It supports rest, recovery, digestion, regulation, and our ability to settle after stress.

We need both.

The goal isn’t to eliminate stress or stay perfectly calm all day. A healthy nervous system should be able to move into a stress response when necessary and then shift back toward regulation and recovery afterward.

The challenge comes when a child’s nervous system has a harder time making that shift.

When the body is already carrying a high stress load, an ordinary transition can become one more demand the nervous system has to process.

Instead of adapting smoothly, the child may become overwhelmed.

That can look like meltdowns, shutting down, arguing, running away, becoming extremely silly or hyperactive, crying, freezing, or refusing to move forward.

The behavior is what we see.

But nervous system stress may be part of what’s happening underneath it.

ADHD, Anxiety, and Sensory Challenges

Although ADHD, anxiety, and sensory processing challenges are different, children experiencing them can share one important struggle: adapting smoothly when their environment changes.

A child with ADHD may become deeply engaged in a preferred activity and have difficulty shifting their attention toward something new.

A child experiencing anxiety may begin worrying about the next activity before the transition even happens.

A child with sensory challenges may already be using significant neurological energy to process lights, sounds, textures, movement, and everything else happening around them.

Then we ask them to switch gears.

For a nervous system that is already working overtime, that additional demand can sometimes be enough to push them past their capacity.

This is why we believe behavior strategies are only one piece of the puzzle.

Sometimes we also need to understand what is happening with the nervous system responsible for processing and adapting to all of that input in the first place.

How Stress Can Build Over Time

At ILC, we often talk about a child’s total stress load.

Rarely is there one single event that explains everything a family is experiencing. Instead, we often see layers of physical, chemical, and emotional stress accumulating over time.

Those stressors can begin during pregnancy and birth and continue throughout childhood.

Pregnancy stress, difficult or complicated births, C-sections, assisted deliveries, illnesses, injuries, falls, disrupted sleep, medications, environmental stressors, busy schedules, screen exposure, sensory overload, and emotional stress can all become pieces of a child’s overall story.

This does not mean that one difficult birth, round of antibiotics, fall, or stressful season automatically causes neurological challenges.

It means we want to look at the whole picture.

Every nervous system has a certain capacity to adapt to stress. When demands repeatedly outweigh that capacity, some children may have a harder time returning to a regulated state afterward.

In chiropractic, we also evaluate for areas of neurological and spinal dysfunction that may influence how effectively the brain and body communicate and adapt.

Rather than looking for one thing to blame, our goal is to understand:

How much stress is this nervous system carrying, and how well is it adapting to that stress today?

What You Can Do at Home

There are several simple ways you can make transitions easier on your child’s nervous system.

Give plenty of previews and countdowns.
Instead of suddenly ending an activity, give your child time to prepare. Try reminders at 10 minutes, 5 minutes, and 1 minute before the transition.

Create predictable routines.
When the brain knows what comes next, it doesn’t have to work as hard to process the unexpected. Consistency can be especially helpful during mornings, after school, and bedtime.

Use movement between activities.
A quick walk, stretch, dance break, jumping jacks, or a few minutes outside can give the body an outlet before asking the brain to focus on something new.

Prioritize sleep and recovery.
A tired nervous system usually has a much smaller window for handling stress. Consistent sleep routines can make a noticeable difference in how children adapt throughout the day.

Regulate before you reason.
When your child is already overwhelmed, it usually isn’t the best moment for a long explanation or lesson. Help their body settle first, then talk through what happened later.

Pay attention to your own nervous system too.
Children take in so much from the adults around them. Slowing your voice, simplifying directions, and staying grounded can help create a safer environment for their nervous system to settle.

These tools can be incredibly helpful.

But if your family is consistently using them and transitions still feel disproportionately difficult, it may be worth looking deeper.

When It Feels Like You’ve Tried Everything

If you’ve tried the routines, timers, charts, movement breaks, earlier bedtimes, and every parenting strategy you can find, but transitions are still one of the hardest parts of your day, there may be more information worth gathering.

Sometimes they need more sleep, movement, nourishment, or connection.

Sometimes they need additional therapeutic or medical support.

And sometimes their nervous system may need additional support regulating and adapting to the stress it is carrying.
